What does it mean to be a territorial authority, such as a baron or baroness?
This is a question I find myself either asking, or discussing of late. Here are a few of my ideas on this topic:
I expect that much of this will be a real learning experience for anyone who steps up to serve in this type of role. It is indeed fortunate that our Barony has such a strong sense of community, where I see people pulling together to learn new skills, advance their passions and serve the Barony. In truth, it is for this reason why I wish to contribute to Rising Waters in this way, and I hope to continue serving Barony and Kingdom for years to come in many ways.
This is a question I find myself either asking, or discussing of late. Here are a few of my ideas on this topic:
- An Advocate. The Baroness has a responsibility to make themselves accessible to the Barony, particularly to the people of the Barony -- to advocate for those members who may not yet be well-established in the barony or the society. Sometimes baronial members move away, life takes them in other directions (and what have you), and it's important to assist those that are moving out of the area in continuing in the SCA. I have had this experience myself, and understand how much of a shake-up this can cause a dedicated SCAdian. In this circumstance, I would offer a Letter of Introduction, and hope to maintain a connection with a far-travelling friend. Advocacy extends to a responsibility for acknowledgement and recognition. There are Baronial and Kingdom level awards and processes for them. Much good work is done in Rising Waters, and for Rising Waters.
- Being Present. I think that it's important to be aware of and to *know* the people of the Barony. That isn't easy;
- Getting involved. If the baroness is the "heart and soul of the Barony", that has to mean that they have to strive to be a *part* of the Barony, as broadly as they reasonably can. It's impossible for anyone to do everything, although I do try. But I think it's good for them to make an effort to do as much as they reasonably can.
- Acting with fairness. One of the quieter jobs of the Baroness is quiet mediation and diplomacy when necessary. Rising Waters can be less prone to internal politics than many SCA branches, so this duty blessedly isn't needed too often. But when it's important, it's important. The Baroness needs to be able to step back, understand everyone's positions, and do what they can to help bring things to a peaceful resolution, in concert with the Baronial seneschal.
- Leading with gentle strength. Rising Waters has a proud history and strong spirit. We have a tendency to gladly raise our hands and pull our sleeves to get work done. That said, we must also understand that our energy is not infinite, and agree to share the load. One of my more recent passions has been to listen to the ideas of the people around me, help them find their passion, and then encourage those ideas in the people around them.
- Providing an Example. The Baroness, if they make themselves accessible, is in a unique position to help the people of Rising Waters. As the ceremonial head of the barony, their example carries great weight. If they make the time for demos and to welcome newcomers, so will others. They can also see to it that new people have a chance to participate in baronial activities, including the more glamorous activities than washing dishes (although this can be a good time in any bardic kitchen). The Baroness has a responsibility, as well, to recognize issues of over-commitment, well-being, and responsibilities to job and family outside of the SCA, and when those need to take priority over their SCA role.
- Pomp and Circumstance. They breathe new life and enthusiasm into the Barony and that, alone, makes them worthy of cultivation. The Baroness can be a positive role in many ways. As titular figurehead, the Baroness gives an opportunity for pomp and and circumstance to make this historical society more interesting. The Baronial coronet is not an award, it is a role. A service. I have learned this by observing how nobles I respect have held this role. The success in which it is played is measured by how much the general quality of SCA life is enhanced by it. I would like to invigorate court and the other rituals surrounding the Baroness by adding drama, a bit of a storyline, and activity. Hopefully, the role can be played such that it touches on all aspects of Rising Waters and brings them together.
