Letter of Intent
Sent to Their Excellencies Rising Waters, and the Seneschal of Rising Waters:
Greetings unto the members of the Baronial Selection Committee. By your leave, may I present myself as an applicant for the role of Baroness of Rising Waters. I am a long-standing, active member of this Barony and would be honoured to be considered as Heir to Their Excellencies Gema and Dmitri.
I joined the SCA at the Port of Crickstow-on-Sea, while serving in the Canadian Navy in the Kingdom of An Tir. Once I completed my contact, I returned to Ontario to continue my education, and landed in Rising Waters. I continued to travel, living in Drachenwald (2000-2001), and Kingdom of the East (in Isle du Dragon Dormant from 2005-2008), I returned to Rising Waters with my Lord husband, and tiny daughter (at the time). Over the years, my Lord and I have built a home in the Rising Waters community, and my tiny girl is now a young woman. I have developed a history of service to the Barony and Kingdom, as an officer, event and feast steward. I feel that putting my name forward now is the best way that I can continue serving Rising Waters and her people. For more information about my service record in the SCA, I have updated my Ealdormere Wiki page: Sciath.
As a herald, burgeoning rapier fighter, and artisan, I am active in a spectrum of activities. As a result of my service as Kingdom Principal Herald, and A&S Champion, I have come to understand both ceremonial aspects of the SCA, and the hard work behind the administrative side of the SCA. I hope that I might use my experience as a kingdom officer, the connections I’ve made, the networks I’ve built, to better support the Barony of Rising Waters community.
Over the past few years, I have built strong connections within the barony: as a host for meetings, A&S gatherings, and scribal nights. I count myself as fortunate to have met Baroness Fiona, who attended the first convocation of the College of St. Antoninus. I travel extensively throughout the kingdom for events and wear our baronial colours with pride. In foreign lands, I have shown my devotion to Ealdormere by donning the scarlet, the trillium and the chalice as the kingdom marched to war. I have leant my expertise as a teacher in many Known World Symposia, demonstrating my love and dedication as a noble of Rising Waters. Thus, you can be assured of my loyalty to the Lupine Thrones and the Line of the North, and my duty to be a trusted ambassador of both Ealdormere and Rising Waters.
In my heart, I feel that Rising Waters is a strong and vibrant community, and trust that you agree. As Baroness, I wish to continue nourishing its growth and fostering its pride. My vision is to advocate for Rising Waters, while encouraging our community to strengthen our connection to our present—and future—with the traditions of our rich past. The Rising Waters community has always had a strong family-feel, and I have witnessed this strong connect in how we support each other and tackle significant challenges together. This is a vision I hope will be embraced warmly, not only among our newest members, but among our very seasoned residents, as well. As our kingdom enters its twenty-first year, I feel it is important to continue traditions begun in its earliest days while encouraging progressive ideas as an organization and community. Rising Waters has a strong history of accommodation for our residents to ensure that ALL have the opportunity to join in, serve, and take part in the SCA. I believe that diversity, inclusion and equity should continue to remain top-of-mind as our community moves ahead.
To this end, should I become Baroness, I intend to cultivate projects throughout the barony to boost the display of heraldry and artistic ability; encourage the performing arts; and, create more opportunities to tell our stories and traditions. Our history and tradition is rich in pageantry and I believe that it is vital to demonstrate respect to the founders of Rising Waters, by continuing in their footsteps in the hope of elevating the game for everyone in the barony.
Yet while visions and dreams are ideal things, it has been very important to seriously consider the often-demanding nature of these roles. As a protégé, I sought the counsel of Master Gunther Wahlstadt of Bremen and Magistra Nicolaa de Bracton of Leicester. Both have offered their advice, and encouraged me to consider the significance of a three to five year commitment to serving the Barony. I consulted with several nobles who have held this position, including Baroness Annabelle, Baroness Abhillin, Baroness Rosalinda and Countess Genevieve. I wanted to understand the responsibilities of the role, and learn from their experiences. They have encouraged me to consider applying myself as candidate for Baroness, in continuation of my service to the Barony. I have made this decision with diligence, and it is this same diligence that I wish to bring forward as a candidate for Your Excellencies’ successor in Rising Waters; should this be the will of Their Majesties, as guided by the Committee and the people of Rising Waters.
I look forward to sharing some of my dreams with you and the Barony over the course of the selection process, should you select me as a candidate. I would be pleased to answer any questions you or the populace may have, and look forward to the coming months.
In goode and faithful service to the Rising Waters community and family,
Magistra Sciath ingen Chaennaig
